Letters to the Entrepreneur

My Dear Entrepreneur Friend,

Have you ever had those moments where you feel cynical about people or life because of what you have experienced personally? Or maybe you’re doubting what you believe because of what others have told you, and you just don’t know what the truth is. What if what you believe is so big that you cannot ignore what you feel inside. You need to know the truth, and so you start searching. How can I find my answer, how can I find what is true for me?

Let me tell you about an eight-year-old little girl named Virginia O’Hanlon (1889-1971) She wrote a letter to the editor of The Sun, a New York City newspaper at the time of her writing, to find out if there truly was a Santa Claus. Her friends were telling her there wasn’t and so she set out to find the truth. She went to her Papa. He told her that if you saw it in The Sun, then she’d know it was true. So, she sent her letter to the newspaper asking the very important question, “Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?” Here’s a young girl who is having doubts about something big that she believes in and is waiting to hear the truth. What will it be?

Now, on the receiving end of this letter is writer Francis Pharcellus Church, who, according to anecdote stories, was a hardened cynic and atheist. He did not want to be given the assignment of responding to this letter and also refused to have his name penned to the editorial. It was after his death that they gave credit for his writing of this now famous editorial. “More than a century later it is the most reprinted editorial in any newspaper in the English language.”* How does a hardened cynic write such a beautiful editorial that states, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.”* “Nobody sees Santa Clause, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.”* Did Francis connect to something within him, the unseen, to be able to author such a beautiful response?

Both a cynic and an 8-year-old little girl found out the truth – that yes, there is a Santa Claus. My life is about creating impact in this physical world and it comes from my unseen world that lives within me. Do you believe in Santa Claus? Love? Generosity of the heart? I know that transformation comes from within – the unseen. Whatever your beliefs are in life and in business – it comes from the unseen – the idea/thought that is within your mind. Our beliefs come from the unseen and propels us into how we choose to live our lives.

If you were given the assignment to respond to Virginia’s letter. What would your response be? Because no matter what you write to her; it is coming from a place of your unseen-ness – your beliefs. I am penning my own letter to Virginia to help fortify my own belief in the unseen world of love, joy and infinite possibilities. I may need this letter more than Virginia as my life’s work is based on the unseen. The thoughts and stories I tell myself are the stories that I live. As I have said before, I believe everyone has an internal compass; the difference is whether the compass is guided by an internal perpetrator-critic or master-goddess within. These are the “unseen” existences that live within us and make an impact on how we react, respond and live.

How might you benefit by crafting your own response to Virginia? How might it strengthen what you believe in and how you deliver your life’s work? I challenge you to write your own response to Virginia and if you want to share it; post it in the response below!

Dear Virginia,

How lovely of you to write and ask the most important question of whether Santa Claus exists. So many times, we look only for the physical evidence to help prove its existence in the world, just like how your little friends are thinking. They do not see Santa Claus; therefore, he doesn’t exist. My question to you Virginia is, what are the things in life you so wonderfully experience that cannot be seen? Do you experience joy? Love? Generosity? Peace? These all come from a place of being unseen or invisible – does that mean they do not exist? No.

Our thoughts come first before they can move into physical action which brings it into existence. Even laughter starts from an unseen place within us and, fortunately, becomes physically visible to share and spread joy. Dear Virginia, Santa Claus does not need to be seen to spread love, joy and good cheer; it’s what makes the magic of his existence even more amazing. For this to happen for centuries, Santa Claus must exist. So, yes, Virginia, yes, there is a Santa Claus. Just as your beautiful mind, love, and soul exist to bring us joy and gratitude for asking such an important question. Thank you, Virginia, for being YOU!

Be well my little friend and Merry Christmas,
